Advantages of Soda-Lime Glass

Soda-lime glass provides a balanced combination of transparency, manufacturability and strengthening capability for a broad range of industrial and commercial glass components.

High Visible-Light Transmission

Features:

Clear soda-lime float glass provides published visible-light transmission above:

89%

Its optical clarity makes it suitable for transparent interfaces where the underlying display, indicator or illuminated component must remain visible.

Applications: Touch panels, industrial displays, appliance interfaces and transparent protective windows.

Excellent Strengthening Compatibility

Features:

Soda-lime glass responds well to both:

  • Physical tempering
  • Chemical ion-exchange strengthening

This allows the strengthening route to be selected largely around finished glass thickness and mechanical requirements.

Applications: Thin cover glass, HMI panels, kiosks, appliances and protective glazing.

Wide Thickness Range

Features:

Standard soda-lime float glass is produced from approximately:

0.55–25 mm thick

This range supports thin display glass through heavier protective and architectural panels.

Strength After Tempering

Features:

Published mechanical-strength ranges include:

  • Annealed soda-lime glass: 30–70 MPa
  • Tempered soda-lime glass: 120–200 MPa
  • Tempered glass: approximately 4–5× stronger than annealed glass

Applications: Appliance panels, kiosks, vehicle interfaces, lighting covers and other exposed glass components.

Smooth Float-Glass Surfaces

Features:

The float process produces smooth, fire-polished surfaces on both sides of the sheet and provides consistent flat-glass thickness for downstream cutting, CNC machining and display-cover fabrication.

Applications: Cover glass, screen-printed glass, coated glass and precision flat-glass components.

Deep-Processing Compatibility

Features:

Soda-lime glass can be combined with:

  • CNC cutting and edging
  • Hole drilling
  • Slot grooving
  • Step-glass processing
  • Screen printing
  • AG anti-glare treatment
  • AR anti-reflection coating
  • AF anti-fingerprint coating
  • ITO conductive coating

Applications: Finished HMI, touch, appliance and smart-interface glass.

Soda-Lime Glass Applications

Soda-lime glass is used across applications that require transparent, fabricatable and strengthen-able flat glass without the higher thermal-shock requirements associated with borosilicate glass.

Touch Displays & Control Panels

Used for:

  • Industrial HMI panels
  • Marine navigation displays
  • Crane-control displays
  • Self-service kiosks
  • Touch-panel covers

The source specifically describes fabricated cover glass down to approximately 2.0 mm for industrial-display applications.

Household Appliances

Tempered soda-lime glass is used for:

  • Coffee-machine interfaces
  • Oven-door components
  • Heater-control panels
  • Range hoods
  • Refrigerator display windows

Thermal tempering provides additional mechanical strength for appliance glass exposed to handling and moderate temperature cycling.

Smart Home & IoT Devices

Applications include:

  • Socket and switch panels
  • Thermostat covers
  • Smart-home control screens
  • Security-system touch panels

Thin chemically strengthened glass can be combined with multi-color screen printing for integrated control interfaces.

Lighting Applications

Used for:

  • Garden-light lenses
  • Wall-washer covers
  • Pool-light windows
  • Architectural-lighting diffusers

Low-iron or clear soda-lime substrates can be combined with high-temperature printing where light transmission and outdoor appearance are important.

Automotive & Transportation Displays

Applications include:

  • Vehicle display covers
  • Instrument-panel glass
  • Dashboard touchscreens
  • Head-up display substrates

Typical processing can combine dimensional machining, AG treatment and chemical strengthening.

Medical Device Displays

Soda-lime cover glass can be fabricated for:

  • Patient monitors
  • Diagnostic panels
  • Surgical-device interfaces
  • Medical display covers

AG treatment, chemical strengthening and precision screen printing can be integrated according to the finished component design.

Soda-Lime Glass Conditions

The same soda-lime float substrate can be supplied in different mechanical states according to thickness and finished-component requirements.

Annealed Soda-Lime Glass

Standard float glass before strengthening.

Published characteristics:

  • Mechanical strength: approximately 30–70 MPa
  • Visible-light transmission: >89%
  • Suitable for cutting, machining and subsequent processing
  • Available across the broadest thickness range

Annealed glass is used where additional strengthening is unnecessary or where further fabrication must still be completed.

Physically Tempered Soda-Lime Glass

Thermal tempering heats the glass and then rapidly cools the surfaces to create residual surface compression.

Published process range and performance:

  • Heating temperature: approximately 620–680°C
  • Minimum glass thickness: approximately 3 mm
  • Strength: approximately 4–5× annealed glass
  • Published mechanical strength: 120–200 MPa
  • Small-fragment break behavior

All cutting, drilling and other geometry-defining processes must be completed before thermal tempering.

Chemically Strengthened Soda-Lime Glass

Chemical strengthening uses potassium/sodium ion exchange to create a compressed surface layer without the same quenching limitations as thermal tempering.

Published processing capability:

  • Salt-bath temperature: approximately 400°C
  • Surface compression: >450 MPa
  • Depth of layer: >8 μm
  • Typical treatment time: 4–8 hours
  • Suitable for glass thinner than 3 mm

This route is particularly useful for thin cover glass where physical tempering is impractical.

The relatively high coefficient of thermal expansion is one reason soda-lime glass is easy to thermally temper, but it also makes the material less resistant to rapid temperature changes than low-expansion borosilicate glass.

Chemical Resistance

Soda-lime glass provides moderate chemical resistance for ordinary industrial and commercial service.

The source identifies resistance to most acids while noting vulnerability to:

  • Strong alkalis
  • Hydrofluoric acid

For aggressive chemical environments, borosilicate or another dedicated technical glass may be more appropriate.

When to Choose Soda-Lime Glass

Soda-lime glass is generally the stronger fit when the project requires:

  • Standard flat-glass availability
  • Thin or thick cover glass
  • Physical or chemical strengthening

When to Consider Borosilicate Instead

Borosilicate is better suited where the primary design requirement is:

  • Lower thermal expansion
  • Higher thermal-shock resistance
  • More demanding chemical exposure
  • Laboratory or high-temperature service
