IK10 Impact Resistant Glass
IK10 glass is tempered cover glass that, mounted in its housing, withstands a 20-joule impact, a 5 kg mass dropped 400 mm, under IEC 62262. We make impact-rated cover glass for outdoor and public devices, from 3 mm IK07 panels to 6 and 8 mm IK10 panels, in clear or ultra-clear tempered glass, printed, drilled, stepped and AG or AF coated.

IK Levels and the Glass Behind Them
IEC 62262 rates impact protection by energy. These are the upper levels used for cover glass, with the tempered soda lime thickness typically needed to meet each one.
| IK level | Impact energy | IEC 62262 test mass and drop height | Typical tempered glass |
|---|---|---|---|
| IK06 | 1 J | 0.25 kg from 400 mm | 3 mm |
| IK07 | 2 J | 0.5 kg from 400 mm | 3 mm |
| IK08 | 5 J | 1.7 kg from 300 mm | 4 mm, or 2 mm aluminosilicate on small panels |
| IK09 | 10 J | 5 kg from 200 mm | 6 mm |
| IK10 | 20 J | 5 kg from 400 mm | 6 mm, 8 mm on larger panels |
Moving from IK08 to IK10 quadruples the impact energy, which is why the glass steps up from 4 mm to 6 mm or more.
What Decides the Rating
The rating belongs to the assembly
IEC 62262 tests the enclosure, not loose glass. The same panel can pass or fail depending on how it is supported, the gasket or adhesive behind it and the frame around it. Ask for the test to be run on the glass mounted as it will be in your product.
Panel size changes the result
A larger unsupported span flexes more under impact. In our tests, 2.0 mm tempered soda lime on a 10-inch panel reached IK07, while 3.0 mm on the same size reached IK08.
Glass type, and thickness for touch
Thick glass reduces capacitive touch sensitivity. Chemically strengthened aluminosilicate, with surface compression above 650 MPa, reached IK08 at 2.0 mm on a 7-inch panel, against 3–4 mm for tempered soda lime.
Holes, steps and edges
Holes and stepped edges are cut and ground before tempering, and their edges are finished smooth so no chip starts a crack under impact. A stepped edge lets a 6–8 mm panel sit flush in a thinner bezel.
Impact-Rated Panels We Have Made
| Device | Glass | Processing | Print and coating | Rating |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Smart parking meter | 3 mm ultra-clear, thermally tempered | Polished safety edge | Black and white print (RAL 9004, RAL 9001), AF | IK07 |
| Outdoor device | 6 mm thermally tempered, 271 × 237 mm | Four drilled holes, matte safety edge | One-color black print, ≥90% transmission | IK10 |
| Outdoor device | 8 mm thermally tempered, stepped | Matte stepped edges | One-color black print, ≥90% transmission | IK10 |
IK Glass Questions
IK08 or IK10?
IK08, at 5 J, covers knocks and accidental impacts on charging piles, industrial controls and gas detectors, at a lower thickness and cost. IK10, at 20 J, is for unattended public equipment exposed to deliberate abuse, such as ATMs, vending machines and outdoor kiosks.
Will a touch screen work through 6 mm glass?
Yes, but the touch controller must be tuned for the thickness and any air gap. If touch response is the priority, consider 2 mm chemically strengthened aluminosilicate at IK08.
What helps outdoors?
UV-resistant inks keep printed borders from fading, and an AG surface keeps the display readable in direct sunlight.
