Corning Gorilla Glass Material Guide
We fabricate Corning® Gorilla® Glass into custom cover glass from 0.33 mm to 2.0 mm thick, working mainly with Gorilla® Glass 3 and Gorilla® Glass for large-format displays. Parts are CNC shaped, chemically strengthened, then coated, printed and bonded for medical devices, industrial dashboards, smart home controls and outdoor equipment.

Gorilla Glass 3 vs. Gorilla Glass for Large Format
Corning Gorilla Glass is an alkali-aluminosilicate cover glass, and the two grades we use most differ mainly in format and in how their strength is specified.
| Property | Gorilla® Glass 3 | Gorilla® Glass for large format |
|---|---|---|
| Standard thickness | 0.4–2.0 mm | 0.55, 0.7, 1.0, 1.5, 2.0 mm |
| Density | 2.39 g/cm³ | 2.39 g/cm³ |
| Young’s modulus | 70 GPa | 68 GPa |
| Vickers hardness, unstrengthened (200 g) | 555 kgf/mm² | 551 kgf/mm² |
| Vickers hardness, strengthened (200 g) | 653 kgf/mm² | 654 kgf/mm² |
| Thermal expansion (0–300 °C) | 7.58 × 10⁻⁶ /°C | 7.55 × 10⁻⁶ /°C |

Specifying Strength on a Gorilla Glass Part
Gorilla Glass gets its strength from ion exchange, and that step happens in the fabricator’s furnace, not at Corning. Corning does not publish a fixed compressive stress for Gorilla Glass 3; the result depends on thickness and on the strengthening process applied after cutting and edging. Two parts cut from the same sheet can leave different factories with different surface strength.
That is why we recommend putting a strength target on the drawing instead of the brand name alone: a minimum compressive stress and depth of layer, such as the 650 MPa at 40 µm that Corning lists for its large-format grade. We then strengthen to that target and report the measured values. For small handheld and touch parts, Gorilla Glass 3 between 0.4 and 1.1 mm is the usual choice; for kiosks, signage and large HMIs, the large-format grade at 1.0–2.0 mm keeps the stress target consistent across the panel.
Gorilla Glass Parts We Make
Most of our Gorilla Glass work is 1.0–1.1 mm cover glass for instruments and control panels.
| Part | Grade | Thickness | Processes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ultrasonic hemostatic system cover (medical) | Gorilla Glass 3 | 1.0 mm | CNC, AF coating, silkscreen |
| Portable multi-function analyzer cover (medical) | Gorilla Glass 3 | 1.1 mm | CNC, AF coating |
| Smart thermostat panel (bathroom fixtures) | Gorilla Glass 3 | 1.0 mm | CNC, AF coating |
| Drilling machine dashboard display (industrial) | Gorilla Glass 3 | 1.0 mm | CNC, AF coating, silkscreen |
| Excavator dashboard panel (industrial) | Gorilla Glass 2320 | 1.1 mm | CNC, silkscreen, AG |
| Infrared scanner window (instruments) | Gorilla Glass 2320 | 1.0 mm | CNC, AF and AR coating |
How to Confirm Genuine Gorilla Glass
Because Gorilla Glass is a brand, buyers should be able to trace it from sheet to finished part. We support three checks.
- 1
Material certificate
The raw sheet comes with a certificate of material from the Corning supply chain, matched to the grade and thickness on your order.
- 2
Strength verification
After ion exchange, compressive stress and depth of layer are measured, and a ball drop test can confirm impact performance on sample parts.
- 3
Certificate of Conformance
Each delivery ships with a Certificate of Conformance stating the material and the agreed specification.
▸ Color check: genuine Gorilla Glass and ordinary soda lime look different edge-on, which gives a quick first screen.
▸ Composition analysis: for disputes, a lab composition test separates aluminosilicate from soda lime glass.
▸ Later generations: Gorilla Glass 4, 5 and 6 need a specific secondary strengthening process, so ask any supplier quoting them how that step is done.
