Ultra Thin Glass

We supply ultra thin glass under 2 mm in soda lime, borosilicate, aluminosilicate and alkali-free grades, down to 0.1 mm. Sheets are cut, edged, drilled and coated into cover glass, sensor windows, micro-slides and optical substrates, with grades chosen by thickness, strength and optical needs.

Ultra Thin Glass by Grade

We treat any glass thinner than 2 mm as ultra thin. Below that line, the grade decides which thicknesses and sheet sizes are available.

Glass Type Thicknesses under 2 mm Maximum sheet or format
Soda lime float Soda lime From 0.28 mm 2,438 × 1,829 mm (96 × 72 in)
Corning Willow® Glass Flexible ultra-thin 0.1, 0.2 mm 110 × 1,200 mm
SCHOTT AS 87 eco Aluminosilicate 0.100, 0.145, 0.210, 0.250, 0.300 mm 500 × 400 mm (19.7 × 15.7 in)
SCHOTT D 263® T eco Borosilicate 0.175–1.1 mm 432 × 356 mm (17 × 14 in)
AGC EN-A1 Display substrate 0.3, 0.5, 0.7 mm Discs, 150, 200, 300 mm
Corning Gorilla® Glass Aluminosilicate 0.4, 0.55, 0.7, 1.1 mm 1,520 × 1,460 mm (59.8 × 57.5 in)

Choosing by Thickness Band

Each thickness band narrows the choice of glass and changes how the part is handled and strengthened.

  1. Under 0.3 mm

Willow® Glass, AS 87 eco, D 263® T eco and the thinnest soda lime. Glass this thin flexes like film, so it suits sensor covers, micro-slides and low-profile displays. Where strength is needed, AS 87 eco is built for chemical strengthening, and soda lime can be chemically strengthened from 0.21 mm.

  2. 0.3 to 1 mm

The widest choice: Gorilla® Glass, Dragontrail™, D 263® T eco, EN-A1, EAGLE XG® and Borofloat® 33. Most touch covers, mobile and VR parts sit here, and chemical strengthening is the usual route for aluminosilicate grades.

  3. 1 to 2 mm

Display and signage covers, with low iron from 1 mm and etched non-glare glass at 1.1 and 1.9 mm. Thermal tempering starts at 3 mm, so parts in this band are chemically strengthened, or heat strengthened from 2 mm.

Working With Ultra Thin Glass

Cutting and edging

Ultra thin sheets are cut and seamed or circle ground to size and shape, and precision CNC adds holes and notches. Thin edges chip more easily than thick ones, so we seam every cut edge before further handling or coating. Very small parts are diced rather than machined one by one.

Coatings

Thin substrates take the same thin-film coatings as thicker glass: custom V-coat, multi-band and broadband AR, AR to MIL-C-14806A, shortpass and longpass filters, bandpass filters, UV and NIR blockers, and broad or narrowband scanning mirror coatings. Coatings can be made autoclavable, biocompatible or chemically compatible for medical and lab use.

Printed and conductive features

Borders and markings use color-matched epoxy ink or non-conductive ink. For electrical connections to coated glass, we apply silver epoxy, silver frit or CrNiAu bus bars.

Applications

Ultra thin glass is used in laptop and PC cover glass, mobile devices and tablets, touch displays, digital signage and anti-glare screens, virtual reality, medical micro-slides, photonics, satellite and solar panels, automotive and aviation displays, and picture framing.
